An Ethical Analysis of Solitary Confinement in U.S. Prisons

Abstract

This paper is an ethical discussion of the practice of solitary confinement in the American prison system bearing in mind that the practice can induce hallucinations. Based on empirical data and published case studies, the paper utilizes three perspectives to determine whether this is ethical and what alternative practices can be used.

  • Riya Doshi

    Riya is a member of the Class of 2023 from Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, in the College of Arts and Science studying Medicine, Health, and Society and Philosophy with a minor in Communication of Science and Technology. On campus, she is involved in the College Scholars Program,Volunteers for Health, and the Vanderbilt Vanguard, an online STEM newspaper. Upon graduation, she plans to attend medical school and pursue a career in health policymaking
